GREY NURSE SHARKS UPDATE OCTOBER 2009 Dear shark watcher
We are now compiling the final report and need your HELP with completing the final questionnaire to compare to the baseline survey. This will allow us to measure feedback and success of the project. Please complete this short survey (takes 5 minutes) on sharks and community monitoring. Please also circulate this email to fellow divers, fishers or those interested in sharks and encourage them to also complete the survey as we need at least 100 responses.

The Great Australian Shark Count (now called Great Australian Shark Watch) has been a tremendous success - we have now reached almost 14,500 shark sightings (see www.auf.com.au )- Congratulations and please keep involved as you are making a difference for sharks, community monitoring and sustainable fisheries.
The final report will be submitted to DAFF in November and will then be available on the AUF website. We are also seeking additional funding to ensure we can collect long-term community data on sharks.

GREY NURSE SHARKS UPDATE MARCH 2009
Dear Shark Counter
The Great Australian Shark Count has been a tremendous success thanks to your participation- we have now reached almost 11,500 shark sightings (see www.auf.com.au)- Congratulations and please keep involved as you are making a difference for sharks, community monitoring and sustainable fisheries.
We are now planning our first dedicated shark counting weekend for 2009 on 27-28 and 29th of March and we want lots of divers and recreational fishers to be involved
The first 2009 dedicated weekend will focus on NSW and Grey Nurse Sharks (as well as other species) and we plan on involving all clubs and many divers up and down the coast and particularly those in the Blue Water Classic.
This will also allow us to do a comparison between sharks counted in 2008 and 2009.
Incentives
For those who count sharks in the 28-29 and 30 March weekend you have a chance to win a random draw blue shark count wetsuits (with AUF, Recfish and Shark Count logo) and sleek shark t-shirts (thanks to Adreno)
We also want other states to count sharks too please :-)

GREY NURSE SHARKS UPDATE JUNE 2008
The AUF has been funded by the Commonwealth Community for an 18 month project "Monitoring of threatened species and education of underwater fishing activities". Community Monitoring will give recreational divers and fishers some facts about what they do and also provide information for management. It will complement other Commonwealth initiatives for monitoring Grey Nurse Sharks.
The Great Australia Shark Count Project has set a new world record. It has over 4000 sighting and is now the largest community shark count in the world, with more sharks than the multi-award winning Ecocean whale shark project, which has 1100 sightings over 10 years. It is also significantly larger that the global Shark Trust, which has about 200 sightings since 1997.

Recfish Media Release -18th October 2007 Media Release
The Nature Conservation Council's appeal to the Tribunal against the Commonwealth Govts declaration that the NSW Ocean Trap and Line Fishery be an approved wild life trade operation has been rejected by Justice Downes - the Tribunal President.
This is a wonderful victory for commonsense and the application of law over questionable science and emotional rhetoric by the NCC and its supporters.
This is a monumental achievement for recreational fishers and we must all heartily thank Recfish for having the gumption to take up the case to protect our interests. Thanks is also due to Julian Pepperell and Marcus Lincoln Smith who gave evidence on Recfish's behalf and also the legal team from Deacons and our Counsel Geoffrey Kennett.

GNS Fight Moves To The Courts
RECFISH, the national peak body that represents recreational angler’s interest has joined legal proceedings that the Nature Conservation Council (NCC) has initiated to try to force the government to create marine sanctuaries in key Grey Nurse Shark habitat areas. NCC is appealing against the Australian Government's environmental approval for the Ocean Trap and Line Fishery – a commercial fishery that is known to significantly impact on the Grey Nurse Shark. NCC will ask the Administrative Appeals Tribunal to mandate marine sanctuaries and fishing gear changes to significantly reduce the impact of hook and line fishing on grey nurse sharks.
Whilst originally aimed at commercial fishing practices, the argument has been somewhat expanded to include recreational anglers. RECFISH applied and was accepted to become a party to the proceeding in and effort to refute some of the evidence the NCC is presenting. RECFISH is seeking an order that the application of the NCC be dismissed.
